Offline is the first requirement

A system that records the sync time rather than the work time makes every duration measurement wrong, and the error is invisible because the data looks complete.

Design for one hand and dirty gloves

That argues for large targets, few taps, structured choices rather than free text for common cases, voice entry for notes, and a screen that is readable in a dark plant room and in direct sunlight on a roof. Show the history, not just the task

The most valuable thing a mobile system can put in front of a technician is what happened last time on this asset. Previous jobs, what was found, what was fitted, what was deferred.

Without it, a recurring fault is diagnosed from scratch on every visit, and the accumulated record — the entire point of the system — is available to everyone except the person standing in front of the equipment.

Photographs are the cheapest evidence

A photograph of a condition found, a completed installation, or a meter reading takes seconds and settles arguments that would otherwise take hours. For contractor work it is often the only independent record of what was there.

The practical requirements are that images attach to the job and the asset rather than living in a camera roll, that they survive export, and that storage limits are understood before a year of photographs hits them.

Barcodes and tags do real work

Scanning a tag on the asset to open the right record removes the most common data quality failure in maintenance systems, which is work recorded against the wrong asset.

It also provides evidence of attendance at the asset rather than at the site. That is a proportionate verification — a scan at the point of work — and it is considerably less intrusive than continuous location tracking while answering the question better.
