AUSTIN (KXAN) – Austin apartment managers are going to get a little help from the city, to the tune of an 80 percent rebate, if they install charging stations for electric vehicles.

Austin Energy has developed the pilot program because of the influx of renters who drive electric vehicles moving to Austin. Since May, Austin Energy has installed plug-in stations at six apartment complexes, with about dozen more set to get the stations in the future.

Many of these complexes have or want to attract prospective residents who have electric vehicles. With that comes a hefty price tag, but under this rebate program complexes that qualify for the rebate, earn up to 80 percent in rebates, up to $8,000 for equipment and installation.charging station 1

Maintenance engineer at The Kenzie at the Domain, John Black, feels this is a good investment with Austin’s growing electric car community.

“We have five residents right now that have electric cars. We have one on the way. It’s convenient to be able to drive home and charge your car and wake up in the morning and everything is good.”

Here’s where you can learn more about bringing a charging station to your apartment complex and how Austin Energy can help.
